Re: No Pep for the HPHS Football Team?

At last night’s Highland Park ISD board of trustees meeting, Superintendent Dawson Orr addressed concerns about the scheduled Highland Park High School gym remodel.

“The scenario we were dealing with is how do we accommodate all of the program needs at the same time you’re taking major space out,” Orr said.

Before any real work can be done, asbestos has to be removed, and that can take several weeks. Before that can happen, the district needs the facility for AP testing. According to Orr’s figures, around 50 percent of HPHS students (80 percent of both juniors and seniors) take AP tests, something that is a great source of pride in the district.

Trustee Jeff Barnes asked parents and students at the meeting to bear with them. “We’re doing the best we can,” he said.

According to Helen Williams, the district’s communications director , the gym will be closed throughout the summer and during the first week of the 2010-11 school year.

Did he say he was canceling the pep rally’s while the gym is closed, or are they going to relocate?

I’m confused, I thought this thread was about pep rallys. Are you implying that because the gym will be closed only during the first week of 10-11 school that they will have all pep rallys in the gym?

@Avid Reader: Sorry I wasn’t so prompt at answering the question. According to the district’s director of communications, Helen Williams, there will be no interruption in the pep rally schedule. The season-opening game is on Sept. 3, and the gym should be completed by then.

UPDATE: Williams says that the gym should be open by Aug. 27, which will preceed the actually the season-opening game against Everman at SMU on the 28th.

What really upsets me about this is that all of us juniors have waited throughout high school for the honor of sitting in the senior section during pep rallies, and now next year we will not be able to.

Thanks for the update Joanna. Junior Boy, look at the post above yours, it appears that you are in luck and will be able to snag those cool “senior seats” after all.

Thanks a bundle! I just read about how they were condensing the work into a much smaller amount of time…good idea on their part… half of the worlds construction projects wouldn’t take so much time if they just brought in more people and worked faster!
