Hillcrest’s Melendez Scores $5K DISD Scholarship
Hillcrest basketeball (and all-around) standout Andrea Melendez is the recipient of this year’s $5,000 Eric Louis Brown Scholarship, given each year to an outstanding DISD student-athlete. The star shooting guard, who also ran track and cross country is a first-generation college student who plans to pursue a nursing degree. She’s already been accepted to Concordia University and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.
An excerpt from her scholarship application:
“The facts hit me hard because I wasn’t used to the idea. But I soon realized that if I wanted to be a part of the team, I needed to work with them and not do my owne thing. … Teamwork goes a long way, not only in sports, but in education as well. I feel that when you work as a team and all want to reach the same goal, anything is possible.”
