Are Cigs the Next Retro Trend?

Maybe some people light up at home but I thought smoking had become almost taboo-ish. You know, since it’s totally gross and causes cancer and stuff. A local church youth leader told me that he recently witnessed some HPMS students taking a smoke break behind the 7-11 on Hillcrest.

Lately I’ve noticed more car smokers (icky) and people lingering with a cig before entering a building. Then yesterday afternoon, this lady was reading a book in the Snider Plaza parking lot while she enjoyed her smokes. Very 80s.

I cringe to think about it but, are cigarettes on the comeback?

No, cigarette sales have been trending down over the past decade. A lot of it has been due to large increases in taxes on cigarettes.

I have been surprised recently with the amount of kids that smoke cigarettes. A lot of the kids who smoke pot naturally smoke cigarettes as well, although there are some who think it is nasty. There have been several times lately that I have gotten in the car with kids and the first thing they do is roll down the windows and light up. They even had to leave during lunch for a smoke break! It is definitely something that I have seen a lot of. They always offer to me but I have yet to try one.

Smoking cigarettes is such a social faux pas amongst grownups these days that the only place I’d do it is in some crappy Las Vegas casino. Which I did this summer and enjoyed thoroughly. Other than that, it’s a gross habit.

Also, to Teenage Girl: good for you for not trying one and don’t do it! Trying a pack in college got me hooked for like, decades. Seriously, the addiction potential for some people is off the chart.

Having just returned from Vegas, MK, let me tell you, it isn’t just the crappy casinos where the smoke is thick. It’s all of them.

Word from the college crowd is that cigarette smoking is not only acceptable, but prevalent across their campuses today. High school, and even middle school age boys smoke cigars in our neighborhood with parent knowledge and approval. No harm. A right of passage. A guy thing. I’m personally not thinking so.

Just yesterday as I walked past a young man smoking in a parking garage at NorthPark, it dawned on me that I have noticed more smokers just in the last couple weeks – in cars, walking around, etc. Hope it’s not going to be trendy again! Yuck.

I am in 8th grade at HPMS and I have seen many kids smoking and drinking before and after school as early as 7th grade.
