I finally got them to stop after around 8 phone calls. The last call, I asked for a manager, explained that I had asked for the delivery to be stopped on multiple occasions and that I considered it trash that they were throwing in my yard. I told her if she couldn’t figure out a way to have it stopped that I consider it trespassing and littering my property and that I just might need to discuss it with the HP police and see if they would start issuing citations. I know that some might consider this an overreaction, but I don’t want the paper, it caused me to have to go get it and carry it to the trash every week. Additionally, I felt that I had to PAY someone to dispose of it when I travel.

My dad had the same problem with a spanish language paper in Dallas. He collected the papers until he had enough papers to spell out “NO MAS” in his front yard, in 4 foot tall letters. Neighbors took photos, giggled, and then entire block took up the fight and called 311 to complain daily, until the newspaper stopped. (It took 2 weeks.)

Agreed. I moved into a house that I assume wanted it. They’ve been throwing the Briefing for a couple of years to me even though I’ve asked for it to stop. I’ve seen the guy that throws it and I figure that at least he has a job because it doesn’t look like he could get much else. I’m sure he’s a nice guy but he doesn’t look highly marketable. I figured that keeping the paper and just recycling it is part of my civic duty to keep this guy employed….But, it does get very annoying to see this paper in my yard when I don’t want it and never asked for it to begin with.

Hey, pot, stop harrassing the kettle. How do you think your columns reach your readers?

@dankoller-The Briefing is a constant piece of trash being thrown in driveways, even if you don’t want it. I believe you have to ask for PCP to be thrown in your yard, yeah?

For what it’s worth they give you free full access to their website in exchange for you letting them trash your yard with Briefing.

I’ve called and emailed twice so far. Still getting it. I say we save them all and dump them in the front yards of the editorial board of DMN.

The large majority of people who get a PCP thrown on their lawns are paying for it. But we do throw unsolicited papers in certain neighborhoods for a limited amount of time, then ask those people if they’d like to pay to continue to receive it. Sort of the same business model employed by drug dealers.

I solved the Briefing matter by sending an email to Bob Mong at the DMN. His email address can be found in the DMN. He took care of it.

Yeah, and you should stop doing it Dan. It’s unwanted.

Considering that, I believe, the DMN is run and staffed by liberal tree-huggers, I find it hard to believe that they would allow such waste of natural resources. But I think we all know it is about money and telling businesses how many people see their paper. If they throw it, your family is counted as someone who sees it. and that is what they tell businesses to whom they are trying to sell advertising space.

I actually want The Briefing but cant get them to get it to me. I have called 5 times to find out why I am not getting it. I will get it every once in a while, a Wed here Fri there, but never ever consistent.

I actually enjoy getting the news that’s in the poor little thing and find the second page about what’s going on in the city interesting and helpful. I even read the ads for the grocery stores that I shop at…BUT having said that, the DMN should be more responsive if you don’t want it so I basically agree with Merritt (of whom I’m a big fan as I find your columns funny and insightful). keep up the good work….The Geez

I travel a lot. All I need is the Dallas Morning News throwing trashy in my yard to show people when I am not home. I come home and have this trash all over my yard. I have asked them to stop in the past and they did, but then restarted. I am going to call the Dallas Police next time they do this and see if I can get a citation issued to the Dallas Morning News as well..

May I suggest, that when you receive an unwanted, litter paper from Dallas Morning News, you lovingly select it from its landing place upon your property and return it to them by substituting it for their regular paper in one of their commercial vending displays.

Although they do have a small recyling value, if you have called to opt out and have emailed to opt out, yet they insist they are valuable enough to deliver freely to the non-receptive public, then trading them for a rack of the full papers seems like a fair trade practice.
