What Would You Have Done?
I just finished a meeting at the West Village Starbucks, where I watched a clumsy barista basically toss a hot coffee onto a woman’s crotch. Once she got over the initial shock, she was remarkably restrained. Perhaps if she had been wearing a business suit, instead of a T-shirt and Daisy Dukes, her reaction would have been more hostile.
Miss Daisy Duke is on the phone with the attorney who got the McDonald’s hot coffee victim a large settlement. Usually the baristas put the coffee up on the bar to pick it up. How did it end up in spilling?
It looked as if the guy fumbled it while affixing the top. The cup was sitting on the counter between the registers.
If you have the oppotunity to see the HBO documentary “Hot Coffee” it will make you think twice before joking about the woman who had McDonald’s coffee spilled in her lap. What most of the public didn’t see are the horrific pictures of the burns the poor woman sustained. She didn’t go after McDonald’s for a huge settlement (the actual settlement was not nearly the amount everyone thinks it was; I think it was close to $400,000), but to protect others from being burned like she was. Hopefully the girl at Starbucks wasn’t badly burned.
Ummm, what would you have done? I’m sure i wouldn’t have been happy about it, but accidents happen. Yelling or getting upset or demanding some kind of compensation over an accident isn’t going to make me feel any better. So what is the appropriate response in your view?
Chivalrously helped the woman out of her wet clothes?
