SMU Staggers Through 28 Point Game

The SMU men’s basketball team stumbled to new lows last night, scoring only 28 points in their 47-28 loss to UAB.

The point total is the lowest in Conference USA history, topping (?) the 36 point output by UAB in a 2002 game against Southern Miss, according to ESPN. It was the lowest point total for the Mustangs since the inception of the shot clock, and the second lowest since 1950, bested (again, ?) only by a 26-point outburst against TCU in 1956.

A few months back, I questioned how long Matt Doherty could stay on the Hilltop. A performance like this can’t help his case.

But Doherty is such a nice guy…and his wife is nice…and his kids go to HP schools. Oh, and he brings his players to church. Who cares about winning? Everyone on the team gets a participation ribbon.

Wow, this gets even more amazing the more you look at the box score. SMU got more shots than UAB despite being out rebounded 44-24. SMU had 10 steals and only 7 turnovers. But they shot less than 18% from the field. They had three different stretches of over seven minutes without a field goal. They made only 8 in the entire game.
