The race is on for the City Council seat in District 13. Just as we were about to go to press with a story that said “as of Tuesday, Leland Burk was the only candidate,” word came that Jennifer Staubach Gates, the eldest daughter of legendary Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, is throwing her hat in the ring.
Gates, who has two children with her husband, John, is a lifelong resident of District 13, according to her campaign’s news release.
“The city of Dallas is in our family DNA,” she said. “I’ve spent decades as a volunteer in the civic community, and now I would like to use that experience and perspective to represent our community on the Dallas City Council.”
While Burk has been endorsed by District 13’s current City Council representative, Ann Margolin, and her predecessor, Mitchell Rasansky, Gates’ campaign lists the following supporters:
- Marianne and Roger Staubach (duh)
- David Biegler
- Toni Brinker
- Tom Dunning
- Marion and Bennett Glazer
- Diane and Mike Gruber
- Isabell Haggar
- Jennifer and Tom Karol
- Brint Ryan
A registered nurse, Gates holds a Bachelor of Science from Incarnate Word College, and she is a 2011 graduate of the University of Dallas’ School of Ministry. Her campaign said she is a trustee for the Catholic Foundation, a member of the President Search/Transition Committee for Ursuline Academy, and a committee member for the Diocesan Education Endowment Trust.
