Congratulations to HPHS National Merit Winners

While there are a lot of smart cookies at Highland Park High School, four have been recognized nationally for their excellence. Ann He, Arya McCarthy, Ellie Reynolds, and Jaclyn Zhou were chosen out of a pool of 15,000 finalists based on their accomplishments, skills, and academic success. Besides bragging rights, each also received a $2,500 scholarship. Great job, everybody!

I don’t see anything here that would suggest Arya is female, Wondering. Assuming you’re correct, why did you feel the need to point out his maleness?

The writer corrected her column. It originally congratulated the ladies.

@Dan. Probably because the Arya people know in Game of Thrones is a girl, not because of anything you wrote.

That was my mistake – I couldn’t find a facebook page for Arya, and because it was a top baby name for girls this year, that was my guess. I corrected it within minutes of posting and I am very sorry.
