Of course, football is a year-round sport in Texas. Any doubters only need to look at the rapid growth of 7-on-7 leagues and tournaments during the summer, which allow skill players and secondary defenders to develop chemistry and polish their timing.

Highland Park is off to a fast start during the current summer season after winning the prestigious EOC Playmakers regional tournament on Friday in DeSoto. The Scots held off Mesquite Poteet 15-12 in the championship game.

HP won eight of its nine games during the tournament, including two wins each against Poteet and Cedar Hill. The Scots also topped Arlington Seguin and three teams from Oklahoma.

With the victory, HP clinched a spot in the Playmakers national tournament next summer, which will be held in the Dallas area. That tournament is scheduled to include qualifiers from nine other regions throughout the country.
