Gribble Gets Major Chance at U.S. Open

Former Highland Park golf standout Cody Gribble will compete in a major tournament for the first time beginning Thursday at the U.S. Open in Pinehurst, N.C.

Gribble will tee off at 1:42 p.m. on the first hole in Thursday’s first round, and at 7:57 a.m. on the 10th hole for Friday’s second round.

He qualified for the tournament at a sectional qualifier earlier this month in Memphis, where Gribble tied for eighth place after shooting a 71-65—136 over two rounds. Former HPHS standout Scottie Scheffler also was in the qualifier, but did not advance.

Gribble, who graduated from HPHS in 2009, won a state title with the Scots as well as a national title while at the University of Texas in 2012. He has since been competing professionally in smaller tournaments, mostly in Latin America.

Highland Park resident Justin Leonard also is in the field this week, along with Gribble’s former Texas teammate, Jordan Spieth.
