SKULDUGGERY OF THE WEEK: Tootsies Rolled

At 4:09 p.m. on Aug. 16, the driver of a red 2001 Chevrolet SUV ran through the front window of Tootsies at The Plaza at Preston Center, causing $3,000 in damage. The driver fled the scene but was tracked down and arrested on a DWI charge.


HIGHLAND PARK

15 FRIDAY
At 7:40 a.m., a contractor at a house in the 4300 block of Lorraine Avenue saw a suspicious yellow late-model Lincoln pull out of a driveway. Earlier that morning, a burglar broke into the house and stole two Samsung flat-screen televisions with a combined value of $1,600, in addition to causing significant damage.

At 12:06 p.m., a resident of the 3100 block of Cornell Avenuereported the theft of a lawn mower and extension cord from an unlocked, attached garage sometime between Aug. 1 and Aug. 10. A contractor replaced the flooring in the house during that time frame and used the garage for storage.

At 8:08 p.m., a thief stole a $4,600 Chanel purse containing a house key, makeup kit, and $10 in cash from a customer inside Mi Cocina at Highland Park Village. A witness said two suspicious people were loitering near the front of the restaurant before fleeing in a silver 2013 Kia Sportage rental car.

Between 8 and 9 p.m., a thief stole an unsecured Trek women’s bicycle from a yard in the 3100 block of Mockingbird Lane.

16 SATURDAY
Between 6 p.m. on Aug. 15 and 9 a.m. on Aug. 16, a miscreant shattered a window on a silver 2014 Bentley Continental in the3400 block of Drexel Drive, causing $3,500 in damage. The incident was part of an overnight vandalism spree that included similar damage to a white Audi S4, a gray GMC Acadia, and a black Chevrolet Tahoe in the 3300 block of Drexel Drive; a Toyota FJ Cruiser in the 3400 block of Drexel Drive; a green Honda CRV, beige Chevrolet Tahoe, and black Cadillac Escalade in the 3100 block of St. Johns Drive; and a silver Mercedes CL500 in the 3200 block of St. Johns Drive during the same timeframe. All reports consisted of windows being cracked or shattered with projectiles, likely bullets.

Between 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 and 6 p.m. on Aug. 16, a vandal fired bullets through the door of an attached garage in the 3500 block of St. Johns Drive. The damage included a hole in a black 2014 Range Rover and in the wall and ceiling of the garage. Later that day, a spent 9mm casing was found in an adjacent alley.


UNIVERSITY PARK

11 MONDAY
Between 11 p.m. on Aug. 10 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 11, a thief stole an $800 pair of Tom Ford eyeglasses and a $300 Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun from an unlocked white 2009 GMC Yukon in the 3100 block of Westminster Avenue.

At 4:45 p.m., a 33-year-old Irving man was arrested in the 7000 block of Preston Road on an assault charge. UPDATE: Charges have since been dropped.

12 TUESDAY
Between 6 and 8 p.m., a thief stole $11,800 worth of jewelry, along with a $300 iPhone and $40 in cash, from the master bedroom closet of a house in the 4100 block of Hyer Avenue.

13 WEDNESDAY
Between June 20 and Aug. 13, a thief stole a license plate from a silver 2010 BMW 328i in the 3400 block of Rankin Avenue.

At 2:30 a.m., Harrison Cooper, 20, of University Park was arrested in the 6700 block of Golf Drive on a public intoxication charge.

Between 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 and 8:57 a.m. on Aug. 13, a vandal broke a window on a silver 2009 GMC Acadia in the 2900 block of Rosedale Avenue, causing $700 in damage.

Between 4:45 and 4:54 p.m., a thief stole $770 worth of power tools from a residential construction site in the 3400 block of Asbury Avenue.

At 10:59 p.m., a 17-year-old Highland Park High School student was arrested in the 4200 block of Grassmere Lane on a charge of possession of marijuana in a drug-free zone.

14 THURSDAY
At 3:56 a.m., police were alerted to an overnight burglary of the Mal Malouf store at The Plaza at Preston Center, during which a thief stole undetermined amounts of jewelry, clothing, and purses.

Between 8:45 and 9:20 a.m., a thief stole a $400 Trek boys bicycle from an open attached garage in the 3400 block of Granada Avenue.

Between 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 13 and 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 14, a thief stole a $600 Trek boys bicycle from an open detached garage in the 3600 block of Asbury Avenue.

Between noon on Aug. 13 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 14, a thief stole a $1,200 Trek mountain bike in the 3400 block of McFarlin Boulevard.

15 FRIDAY
Between 1 and 1:13 p.m., a pickpocket stole a $150 Coach wallet containing $150 in cash and $150 worth of gift cards from a restaurant patron at The Plaza at Preston Center.

17 SUNDAY
At 5:44 a.m., Samuel Baker, 20, of Dallas was arrested in the 3600 block of McFarlin Boulevard on a public intoxication charge.

At 7:38 p.m., a shoplifter stole $12 worth of Sundown vitamins, a $4 CVS bandage, and $3 worth of Tresemme hair-care products from the CVS store at Park Cities Plaza. Shelby Wirtanen, 20, of Dallas was arrested on a theft charge.
