The Highland Park boys made quite a run at their first Class 6A Region II cross country meet on Saturday, finishing third in the team standings to earn a spot in the state meet next weekend. The Scots finished behind College Station and The Woodlands on the course at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.

Rico Lara paced HP with a seventh-place individual finish with a time of 15 minutes, 40 seconds. Three other runners posted personal-best times for the Scots, including Griffin Beitter in 25th place (16:11). Other HP runners who advanced to state include Danny Leland, Andrew Kliewer, Stanton Geyer, Austin Roberts, and Brooks Munn.

On the girls side, HP didn’t qualify for state as a team, but Hope McLaughlin will represent the Scots individually after claiming sixth place overall in a time of 18:33.

The state meet will be Nov. 8 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, with the 6A boys race slated for 1 p.m., preceded by the 6A girls event.
