Skulduggery of the week: Given A Long Lease
At 4:30 p.m., a resident of the 4600 block of Fairfax Avenue reported the theft of a 2013 Mercedes sedan, valued at $130,000, which was leased by his company in December 2012. Two years later, he tried to sublease the car to a third party, and wound up being scammed by someone who produced counterfeit paperwork. He didn’t realize that or suspect theft until Jan. 29, when he wasn’t able to reach the broker about payment. Police later tracked the car to Charlotte, N.C., where it was recovered while in the process of being repossessed.
At 4:51 a.m., Kyle Ryan McCleland, 34, of Dallas was arrested in the 4100 block of Oak Lawn Avenue on two drug possession charges following a traffic stop.
At 9:59 a.m., a resident of the 3600 block of Harvard Avenuereported that a temporary worker from a dinner party the prior weekend altered a $40 check given to them as a tip to read $24,000. The bank did not release the funds after contacting the victim. Three other $40 checks given to temp workers from the same party cleared without incident.
Between 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 and 6:50 a.m. on Feb. 26, a thief stole four tires and rims, valued at $5,000, from a black 2014 GMC pickup in the 4400 block of Hanover Street, and left the truck on concrete blocks.
Between 10 p.m. on Feb. 25 and 7 a.m. on Feb. 26, a thief stole four lug nuts, valued at $50, from a black 2013 GMC Denali in the3200 block of Westminster Avenue.
At 2:38 a.m., Tatum Johnson, 21, of Portland, Ore., was arrested in the 2800 block of Milton Avenue on a public intoxication charge.
Between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., a burglar broke into a tan 2007 Honda Civic in the 6400 block of North Central Expressway and stole a $1,000 Lenovo laptop computer, a $200 leather computer bag, and a $20 JanSport backpack.
