With the season opener just a week away, Highland Park players and coaches are ready for their primary dress rehearsal.

That comes tonight, when the Scots scrimmage Plano West at Highlander Stadium. The varsity action likely will begin about 7 p.m.

It will provide a valuable test for an HP roster filled with new faces, including quarterback Henry Allen, who is scheduled to make his first varsity start on Aug. 29 in the Tom Landry Classic against Frisco Centennial.

Allen takes over a high-powered offense that includes several players from a junior-varsity squad that was undefeated in 2014. The key returnee is running back Stephen Dieb, who led the Scots with 14 touchdowns last season.

On defense, linebacker Hayden Schnieders is the only returning starter on a unit that recorded four shutouts a year ago. While experience might be lacking, HP should have more depth and athleticism on that side of the ball.

The Scots finished 10-2 in their first season at the Class 6A level and fell to Waco Midway in the area round of the playoffs. Their second campaign in District 10-6A starts on Sept. 25 when they host North Mesquite.

Plano West also was 10-2 last season and lost to Euless Trinity in the second round of the playoffs. The Wolves are coached this year by Scott Smith, who comes to Plano West from Lake Highlands.
