There were plenty of individual honors and group festivities to highlight the first meeting of a new year for Boy Scout Troop 68, which has been based at Highland Park United Methodist Church since 1991.

The troop — which has about 50 members mainly from the Park Cities — held its annual cookout on Aug. 30 at the Arden Forest at SMU, where families enjoyed Burger House catering and games. Two scouts, Preston Black and Logan Gwinn, were recognized for achieving Eagle rank and Cooper Ribman was called out into the Order of the Arrow, which is the honor society for Scouting.

This summer, troop members sailed in the Bahamas with Sea Base, where Scoutmaster David Wilkes was called out for the Order of the Arrow. Two Scouts, Will Batelaan and Jake Yarckin, earned the same honor at Camp Alexander in Colorado.

Among the trips planned for the troop next summer are a hike at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and a canoe adventure at the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota.
