‘Lion King’ Cast Will Roar at HPMS This Week

The Sahara will come alive at Highland Park Middle School April 14-17 as students perform the school’s first rendition of The Lion King Jr., from a newly released script of the six-time Tony Award-winning musical based on the eponymous movie.

“When I saw The Lion King on Broadway years ago, the sheer spectacle of the opening number brought tears to my eyes,” said drama director Susan McCormick. “Julie Taymor’s brilliant costume and set designs fascinated me. To be able to share this exciting journey with my students in bringing the junior version to life is a dream come true! We all must take our place in the `Circle of Life.'”

The cast will be led by McCormick, HPMS musical director Katie McDaniel, and Megan Kelly-Bates, the choreographer/co-musical director of Preston Center Dance.

Tickets can be purchased for $5 in the school’s cafeteria this week or 30 minutes prior to showtime. Times are as follows: Thursday at 7 p.m.; Friday at 4 p.m.; Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m.
