Greenhill Defends SPC Girls Volleyball Title
The decorated legacy of the Greenhill volleyball program added its latest piece of hardware on Nov. 5 in Austin, when the Hornets claimed their second consecutive SPC girls championship.
Greenhill swept ESD in the title match after earning four-set wins over St. Stephen’s and John Cooper earlier in the tournament.
Ellen Margaret Andrews posted 13 kills in the final match to pace the Hornets (31-7), who also won the regular-season SPC title. Allie Frymire added 28 assists, Michal Mathis tallied 10 digs and seven kills, and Jessica Pugh contributed 10 digs. Andrews is the team’s only senior.
In the boys bracket, Greenhill was the runner-up after falling to Casady in four sets in the championship match. The Hornets, who won last year’s title, upset top seed St. Mark’s in three sets in the semifinals.
It was the first time since 2007 that neither Greenhill nor St. Mark’s claimed the boys title. The Lions took the third-place match in four sets over St. John’s.
Also at the SPC fall championship meet, Hockaday sophomore Adoette Vaughan defended her individual title in girls cross country, winning the 5-kilometer race by almost 20 seconds over the nearest competitor. Vaughan’s time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds was almost a minute faster than her victorious time last year as a freshman.
