Preston Hollow resident and Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki has been named the recipient of the World Affairs Council H. Neil Mallon Award. Nowitzki will receive the award Sept. 22.
The Mallon Award is presented to individuals who excel in bringing the international spotlight to North Texas, its businesses, governments and people. Nowitzki is regarded as one of the greatest power forwards in basketball history. He has been a Maverick since 1998, and has also represented his native Germany in Olympic basketball.
Off the court, he has been active in humanitarian efforts with The Dirk Nowitzki Foundation. Established in 2001, its mission is to “help provide education, health and well-being for children around the world.” Among other initiatives, the foundation sponsors annual celebrity baseball and tennis events in North Texas to further its mission
Previous Mallon recipients include President George H.W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney among others.
