HP Swimmers Qualify for State

Highland Park brought back trophies for two team titles from the Class 5A Region III meet over the weekend in Frisco.

Highland Park will send 12 swimmers to the UIL state meet after winning both the boys and girls team titles at the Class 5A Region III meet on Feb. 3 in Frisco.

At regionals, the Blue Wave had 25 swimmers qualify for finals and 14 place in the top eight. The state meet is slated for Feb. 16-17 in Austin, where the HP boys won the team championship a year ago.

This year, five boys qualified for state in individual events, including Felix Van Cauwelaert, who won a regional title in the 200 freestyle and was second in the 500 freestyle. Other qualifiers include Ethan Nguyen (50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke), Henry Wang (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke), Omar Hmimy (100 freestyle), and Peter Paulus (100 breaststroke).

HP also earned regional crowns in the boys 200 freestyle relay and boys 400 freestyle relay. The Blue Wave also will swim the girls 200 medley relay, boys 200 medley relay, and girls 400 freestyle relay at the state meet.

Swimmers not mentioned above who will compete in those events include Max Van Cauwelaert, Bryanna Wilder, Katherine Huang, Christina Bambach, Alicia Bi, Maddy Helton, and Taylor Copeland.
