Poteet Stuns Scots in District Opener

Highland Park’s worst offensive game of the season led to an upset loss to Mesquite Poteet in the District 13-5A boys basketball opener on Tuesday.

The Pirates held the Scots to just 13 points after halftime and rallied to hand HP its first home defeat of the season, 41-34. It was the first district setback for the Scots since February 2020.

Rhodes Crow tallied eight points and Coleson Messer had seven to pace HP, which finished with its lowest regular-season scoring output in more than five years.

The Scots (12-4, 0-1) swept two games against Poteet a year ago and will have a rematch this season on Jan. 25 in Mesquite.

In the meantime, they will look to bounce back with a nondistrict game against North Garland on Dec. 29. HP, which won the 13-5A title last year, will return to district play on Jan. 4 at Forney.
