Staunton Leads HP Gymnasts to State Meet

Highland Park will send full teams for boys and girls to the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association state meet beginning April 21 in Rockwall.

HP’s Clayton Staunton will look to defend his boys all-around title after easily winning a gold medal at the Region 1 meet on Tuesday in Rockwall. Staunton scored at least 9.7 on four of six events.

Austin Chapman finished third in all-around for the Scots. He was the runner-up on floor exercise and tied for third on rings and parallel bars.

In girls competition, Ana Simpson led the Lady Scots with a third-place showing on balance beam plus third in the all-around standings. Lily Ford was second on beam, while Kennedy Downing finished third on vault.

Both HP squads placed second behind Rockwall in the team standings at the two-day regional meet, which combined compulsory and optional scores.
