HP’s Staunton Wins All-Around Gold Again

Clayton Staunton clinched his second consecutive state all-around title at the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association state meet in Rockwall. And the HP junior continued to make history in the process.

Staunton won all six individual events, becoming the first gymnast to claim seven gold medals at state since former HP standout Meyer Williams in 2013. Just three athletes have accomplished that milestone in the past 44 years.

Plus, Staunton broke a state-meet record on parallel bars with a combined score of 19.4 over two days. He now holds 13 total state titles, just one short of the school record held by Peter Hegi since 1992.

The Scots were second in the team standings for their best finish in 27 years. HP junior Austin Chapman won bronze medals on pommel horse and vault and placed fourth in the all-around. Chapman was top-five on rings, parallel bars, and floor exercise.

In girls competition, HP placed ninth as a team, highlighted by top-25 all-around finishes by Ana Simpson, Kennedy Downing, and Linda Tran. The Lady Scots didn’t have any event finalists.

Tran and Downing will both represent Texas at the Senior Showcase Invitational national meet on May 19-21 in Fort Myers, Florida.
