Region II Title Sends Rutledge to State

John Rutledge will look to cap a dominant senior season with a gold medal at the Class 5A state track and field meet.

The Highland Park sprinter will be the top seed in the 200 meters on May 13 in Austin following another victory on Saturday at the Region II meet in Arlington. Rutledge’s time of 20.83 seconds was almost a half-second ahead of runner-up Zavion Langrin of Frisco Heritage.

Rutledge, who recently committed to the University of Texas, was fourth at state in 2021. Only one of the three runners who finished ahead of him, Manor’s Che Nwabuko, is back this year. Nwabuko claimed the Region III title on Saturday with a time of 21.07.

The only other HP athlete to reach the podium at regionals was Luke Herring, who placed third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 37.55 seconds, breaking his own school record. Herring advanced to the state meet as a wild-card qualifier.
