Bluffview/Briarwood Estates

Residents of the Bluffview neighborhood, named for the 60-foot bluff of Austin Chalk that rises above Bachman Creek, take their daily walks enjoying the winding lanes and some of the most beautiful hidden topography the city offers.

The former 215-acre dairy farm was developed in 1924 as a suburb of Dallas and annexed into the city in 1943. Early architects built on odd-shaped lots, maintaining the beauty of the mature trees, the spring-fed creek, and the gently rolling hills.

Many early estate homes designed by architects such as Charles S. Dilbeck, Downing Thomas, and Frank Welch are being restored. Graham and Kathy Greene, Signe & Jason Smith, and Svend Fruit have added contemporary designs.

The Bluffview boundaries include Midway Road East to Inwood Road and Northwest Highway South to Lovers Lane, where shoppers can find antiques and home goods at stores like Antique Row, Madre, and Arteriors Too, and women’s clothing at Mary Beth’s, Cabana Lifestyle, and Clover. Bluffview shares a census with the Shorecrest and Cochran’s Chapel neighborhoods.

Just today, I woke to the sounds of a mating pair of barred owls calling to each other after a long night of hunting. Early in the mornings from our porch I can hear this zoological symphony calling me to welcome the new day.
