Simmons, HP Earn Medals at State Tourney
Optimistic about a second-round comeback, Highland Park’s hope for a Class 5A boys golf title was washed away on Tuesday.
The Scots tied for the runner-up spot in the team standings after the final round of the state tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.
That turned it into a one-round event, and HP (with a 298 score) came in three strokes behind Prosper Walnut Grove and even with Montgomery Lake Creek.
In his final tournament for the Scots, senior Brooks Simmons earned his second silver medal at state — he was second in 6A last season — with a round of 70, falling by a single stroke to Frisco Wakeland’s Luke Colton.
Ty Bradford finished in a tie for seventh place after a round of 74. He was competing for HP’s second team, which was fifth in the standings at 311.
Other golfers competing at state for the Scots included Charles Nelson, Blake Goodnight, Jeffrey Rubenstein, Edward Lehner, Gray Gale, Carter Klein, Charlie Simmons, and Andrew Lieu.
Earlier this spring, Brooks Simmons and Nelson were among six junior golfers nationwide to be chosen for the prestigious Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Awards scholarship. Simmons is signed with Texas, while Nelson is heading to Duke.
In Class 6A, Jesuit Dallas was seventh in the team standings with a 313, in another tournament shortened on Tuesday due to rain. Reese Roberts, a Missouri signee, came in fourth with a round of 72.
Roberts tied with Simmons for second a year ago, and last summer became the first true high school golfer to win the Texas Amateur crown.
