Highland Park ISD girls athletic director and coach Susan Bailey was recently recognized for her commitment to HPISD schools and passion for making a difference in the classroom and community.

Bailey received the Highland Park Education Foundation’s 2025 Howie Award. The award is given annually to one HPISD teacher, administrator, or staff member who exemplifies the spirit of community service. It is named in memory of Eileen and John Howie, and celebrates the lasting impact of their generous and dedicated volunteer work.

Bailey, who joined the district in 2005, is known for her outstanding leadership as head coach of the cross country and track teams.

Nominators praised her work developing both a successful girls athletic program and the character of the students involved in it.

Girls on the cross country and track teams participate in service projects, mentor younger athletes, and care for each other. Bailey goes above and beyond for her athletes, including by meeting with team captains to teach them about leadership and team building, one nominator wrote.

“She is always working above and beyond to ensure our girls do the best they can, while not sacrificing their character or any other means to achieve,” the nominator wrote. “She is the consummate leader and works toward developing these girls into strong, confident women. She is the epitome of what this award is dedicated to, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving.”
