Dr. Gary Donovitz, a physician and biomedical entrepreneur, speaks about one of his favorite nonprofits with a sense of wonder.

“Make-A-Wish® North Texas is pure magic,” said the St. Mark’s School of Texas graduate who grew up in Preston Hollow but now lives in Westlake. “They show up for kids facing the toughest diagnoses you can imagine and give them something priceless, the chance to dream big and actually see those dreams come true. At a time when the future feels uncertain, they create life-changing experiences and memories that let kids and their families forget about hospitals, treatments, and tough days. Make-A-Wish® North Texas brings good news, and that child feels hope; they get to be in control, and the entire family gets to feel those rays of hope.”
How did you get involved with this nonprofit?
About a year ago, Kim Elenez invited me to learn more, and I was in. The mission of Make-A-Wish® North Texas lined up perfectly with what the Donovitz Family Foundation is all about, and it’s one where I can see an immediate impact.
Why do you support it today?
I’ve seen what happens when a wish comes true — and it’s unforgettable. The smiles on their faces and the stories their parents tell are powerful. A wish can actually change the trajectory of the child’s recovery and improve the outcome. A study by Dr. Anup Patel, of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, proved it. Children who have wishes are less likely to spend time in the ICU and ER. Not only does that save them from traumatic and painful experiences, but it saves big money. I can’t imagine a better addition to a child’s comprehensive treatment protocol.
What would you say to someone thinking about donating this year?
Donate because if we don’t come together to make their wishes come true, no one will. Make-A-Wish® North Texas is 100% locally funded. There are over 1,100 kids here who are currently waiting for their wish, and you can be the person to make their wish come true. Not donating means that a child’s wish isn’t certain, and unfortunately, neither is their future. So, jump in. Be the reason a wish comes true. Trust me, you’ll feel amazing knowing you helped give a kid and their family a memory they’ll hold onto forever.
