Emily Wickard, the founder and CEO of Avara, was still in her first 30 days of sobriety when her sponsor brought her to speak at Nexus nine years ago.

“I didn’t think I had anything valuable to say because I hadn’t been sober for very long,” the Park Cities resident said. “My sponsor reminded me that early sobriety can feel impossible, and my story might resonate more with the women versus someone who had been sober for decades. That moment started my connection with Nexus, and I’ve been involved ever since!”

What kind of work does Nexus do?

Nexus helps women and their families heal from substance use disorders. They provide life-saving treatment, recovery support, and programs that strengthen the bonds between mothers and children, helping break cycles for future generations.

Why do you support it today?

Nexus is one of the few residential treatment facilities in Texas that invites women to bring their children to treatment. I recognize how fortunate I was to have my husband care for my children while I was in treatment.

I am honored to support mothers who may not be as fortunate as they rebuild their lives, and in the process, become sober, present mothers for their children.

What would you say to someone else considering a donation to the nonprofit this year?

Your gift to Nexus is an investment in second chances. It’s the chance for a mother to get well, for a child to grow up safe and loved, and for a family to break the cycle of substance use disorder.
