The Stewpot: Cory Bowen

“We can’t ignore homelessness and just hope it goes away,” insisted Cory Bowen, a University Park mother of three and community volunteer. “We all deserve a second chance, and The Stewpot is serving them up on a daily basis.”

The agency, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, does so by providing 1,000-plus meals daily at The Bridge in downtown Dallas, operating a food pantry, and offering essential services, including housing assistance, education, and dental care from its Opportunity Center campus, she said. “The Stewpot also empowers clients through a renowned Art Program and provides college scholarships to help students build brighter futures.”

How did you get involved with this nonprofit?

My husband and I spent a lot of time volunteering pre-kids. It was our way of meeting people and getting to know Dallas. One of the most meaningful experiences during that time was serving meals at The Stewpot. A few years later, a college friend invited me to join The Stewpot Alliance Board of Directors, which directly supports The Stewpot and its mission. Now, my husband and I are honored and excited to be co-chairing the Soup’s On Luncheon & Art Show this February — The Stewpot’s annual signature fundraising event.

Why do you support it today?

I want to teach my kids that we’re all part of the same community. We may not know everyone’s story or what they’ve been through, but every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

What would you say to someone else considering a donation to the nonprofit this year?

By supporting The Stewpot, you are investing in solutions for the broader health and safety of our community.
