FORT WORTH — In a game cut short due to inclement weather, a blazing start became that much more critical for Episcopal School of Dallas on Friday.
The Eagles raced ahead quickly against Fort Worth Trinity Valley and came away with a 21-0 road win, posting its second consecutive shutout when the game was called off due to a heavy second-half thunderstorm.
ESD’s early success with the run game opened things up for the passing attack under new starting quarterback Miles Link. He found John Edge Sowa, who dove past the pylon on the opening drive.
Later in the first quarter, Link escaped a third-and-16 situation with a miraculous pass to Curtis Mathes. Immediately afterward, Mathes hauled in another big catch to put the Eagles (2-0) near the goal line. Link capped off the drive by delivering a bullet through the gaps to William Elliott, giving the Eagles a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Miscues plagued both teams in the second quarter. ESD missed a field goal, then the turnovers began to pile up.

The teams exchanged interceptions, leading to a drive that saw the Eagles string together a series of well-executed offensive plays, finished off with a perfect lob pass from Link to Elliott with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
That 21-0 advantage at the break stood up when the game was called just four minutes into the second half due to lightning.
ESD’s defense was dominant throughout the game. The Eagles particularly excelled at shutting down the run and getting pressure in the backfield of the Trojans (0-2).
ESD, which blanked Bishop Dunne 70-0 in its season opener, will travel to Houston to face Second Baptist next week.
