Ben Strodel, a 2011 Highland Park HS graduate, is currently in ICU in a Tyler hospital after suffering a head injury over the weekend.
Strodel, who plans on attending UT in the fall, hit a tree on an ATV Friday after taking a turn too quickly. Another passenger on the ATV was not injured, and helped Strodel to safety. He was airlifted from the crash site in east Texas to Tyler, where he underwent a four-hour surgery to repair a skull fracture.
Doctors are guardedly optimistic, and Strodel will remain in ICU until the swelling subsides.
