In a short-notice press conference this afternoon, civil attorney Mark Senter spoke on behalf of Ryan Romo, the University Park teen a grand jury declined to indict yesterday, and his family.
“The Romo family is gratified and relieved to finally have this horrible nightmare behind us,” the group said via a prepared statement. “We are happy that – in the end – truth and justice prevailed in what was an absurdly false allegation. … Only now can we begin the process of putting our lives back together.”
As a family, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the overwhelming support we received from friends, acquaintances, and even people we did not know that we encountered in our immediate community and throughout North Texas. We will never forget those who refused to jump to conclusions and waited for the truth the come out.”
For Romo, who is no longer enrolled at Highland Park High School, the emotional, academic, and professional damage brought on by his rape charge has been “unbelievable,” said Senter, describing missed signing-day opportunities for the former varsity baseball player. “This is akin to the kids who were seniors in New Orleans when Katrina came through. They lost their senior year. This is horrible. It’s a horrible setback.”
