Scots Still Look for Big Win Total

Highland Park is long used to dozens of wins a season. Nothing has changed that feeling.

An undefeated season is no longer in the picture for Highland Park football.

No matter.

There are lots of wins still on the table.

“We can still go 15-1,” said running back Isaiah Lee.

It’s a lofty goal, but not one that the Scots are incapable of. Over the past 20 seasons, they’ve had at least a 14-win season five times. They were 15-1 in 2017 and 16-0 twice in that span.

Glittering won-loss records are a Scots thing.

Then again, so is playing a tough schedule. Friday night’s Week 2 contest against Lucas Lovejoy brings another test. The Leopards, like the Scots, are coached by a towering figure in Texas high school coaching. Todd Dodge is in his second year leading the Collin County school. The seven-time state champion coach produced a 10-4 record last season.

Allen counters with four state championships, and he is the second-winningest coach in the Lone Star State’s annals. His 460 victories are 30 fewer than the state record.

Friday night’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Leopard Stadium will mark the fourth meeting between the schools. Highland Park won the previous three, including 24-17 a year ago at Highlander Stadium.

Following the Lovejoy game, the Scots continue the fall march with a contest against Jesuit then Pulaski Academy before beginning District 7-5A competition on Sept. 26 at Tyler.
