My dad used to make canned salmon sandwiches. He was really a great home chef, but that dish must have been sentimental because it dang sure didn’t taste good. I mean, it’s a valid concept, but the canned salmon was smelly and mealy in texture.
When I saw that Tonnino, the brand of premium jarred tuna I use, now sells jarred salmon at Whole Foods, I got sentimental and decided to give it a try. I updated the sandwich from white bread to baguette, ditched Miracle Whip for Duke’s and used lemon juice instead of white vinegar. Wow, I’m glad I tried it. My sandwich was outstanding.
The salmon is excellent and super easy to use. Reps for Tonnino’s told me that their Wild Caught Silver Salmon is the first jarred, versus canned, salmon. For me, it’s a more appealing option in my pantry when need inspiration and I can see the actual ingredients rather than a label on a can.
Tonnino’s salmon is sourced exclusively from Alaskan waters and carefully hand-cut to ensure exceptional quality. There’s virtually no similarity to the canned salmon my dad served up and the Tonnino’s, which tastes fresh, clean, and not remotely fishy while maintaining a perfectly firm texture.
Like Tonnino’s jarred tuna line, the salmon is available in other varieties: Extra Virgin Olive Oil; Rosemary with Smoked Olive Oil; and Garlic and Dill. Each is great on its own, but the garlic and dill flavor made an otherwise plain salad a meal and the rosemary and smoked olive oil made an excellent topping for bruschetta.
Tonnino’s Salmon is carried exclusively at Whole Foods in North Texas. I’ve added it to my pantry as a staple for healthy, convenient protein options, maybe you should too.
