Highland Park’s Ryan Sontag won an individual gold medal in dominating fashion at the District 12-5A girls cross country meet on Thursday in McKinney.
Sontag, a junior, completed the 5-kilometer course at Myers Park in 18 minutes, 36 seconds, which was more than 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Presley Robertson of Frisco Wakeland. It was Sontag’s second consecutive win after also claiming gold at the Granbury Invitational in late September.
The Lady Scots also won a district team championship thanks to four runners inside the top 10, including Paisley Bassett, Finley Heckler, and Anne Cooper.
The HP girls will take a full team to the Class 5A Region II meet on Oct. 20 in Arlington. So will the HP boys, who tied for the runner-up spot in the team standings behind Wakeland.
Spencer Haag paced the Scots with a third-place individual finish. Beau Stewart and Luke Hall also broke 17 minutes and came in seventh and eighth, respectively.
In District 13-5A, Hillcrest crushed the field in the boys race on Wednesday at Wilmer-Hutchins behind individual gold medalist Reese Widhelm, who edged teammate Connor Luce by 0.1 seconds as the finish line.

Max Payne, Elijah Flores, and Calvin Payne also placed in the top seven for the Panthers, who earned the team title and will advance to the regional meet.
W.T. White also will head to regionals as the team runner-up, led top-10 district finishes from Jaden Aguero and Diego Monjaras.
WTW was superior in the girls race, with Samanta Posada and Kyler Purpura as the top two finishers. Gracyn Kowalewski and Emma Gandarilla followed closely behind.
The Longhorns will be joined at the regional meet by Hillcrest, whose runner-up district showing was led by McKenna Kell and Ava Thomas.
Meanwhile, Jesuit Dallas was second as a team behind Lake Highlands at the District 7-6A meet on Wednesday at Prestonwood Polo Club.
Brayden Higginbotham paced the Rangers in seventh place individually, while Maddux Click and Ethan Irrobali also ran in the top 10. Jesuit will run at the Class 6A Region I meet on Oct. 21 in Lubbock.
