After riding an offensive surge to three wins in tournament play the weekend of Dec. 6-7, Highland Park returned home and suffered a 53-50 defeat against Class 6A power Grand Prairie on Monday.

The Scots (5-4) trailed by double digits early against the Gophers (8-1) before rallying to within two points in the fourth quarter. However, HP was never able to take the lead.

Canon Wyatt paced the Scots with 14 points and Will Saunders had 10. Grand Prairie’s Steven McLeod tallied a game-high 21 points, while freshman Felix Okam added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

HP finished strong on Saturday at the Athens Invitational tournament, winning three of four games. The Scots scored more than 80 points in lopsided victories over Whitehouse, Palestine, and Marshall, but suffered a one-point loss to Longview along the way.

Next up, HP will head to the Bulldog Classic in Burkburnett, where the Scots will meet Lubbock-Cooper Liberty, Frisco Legacy, and Wichita Falls Memorial prior to bracket play on Saturday.

The tournament will be the final tuneup for HP prior to the District 12-5A opener on Dec. 19 at Carrollton Turner.
