Letter to the Editor: Wheelchairs unwelcome?

I enjoyed reading the writeup on The Plaza at Preston Center (November 2025 issues, Page 13). It is indeed a community gem that I have enjoyed for decades, and I remember picking out my copy of Ballet Shoes, which would become my favorite book, at Taylor’s in the ’90s.

It has been a disappointment, then, as an adult, to learn how tone deaf the management is to the accessibility issues that continue to plague the center.

I have raised red flags repeatedly about how dangerous it is for wheelchairs and strollers to use the Plaza — curb cuts don’t line up or don’t exist at all (in particular, the corner next to Muchacho), and there is no safe way to walk through the parking lots.

Initially, the response was “we’ll get back to you,” and then, later, follow up emails were ignored entirely.

If ADA guidelines are being followed at all, it’s certainly half-hearted with no actual concern for the people who need them. It’s a shame that a place that should foster a sense of community is forcing families and people with mobility challenges out into the street.
