The candidate filing period for municipal races in the Park Cities has passed. The May 2 elections will bring changes to local government, as well as the opportunity to weigh in on Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) membership.
In University Park, current Mayor Tommy Stewart, who has served as the city’s mayor since 2020 and was a city council member from 2010 to 2016, didn’t file for re-election. Randy Biddle filed unopposed to serve as the city’s next mayor.
Current city council members Phillip B. Philbin and Melissa P. Rieman filed for re-election, while Mark Aldredge and Bob Myers will not be returning to the city council. Attorney Alex Bell and property manager Darrell Lane will join the city council.
Because the mayor and four city council members are elected at-large to two-year terms and no places on the ballot were contested, the University Park City Council canceled its general municipal election.
In Highland Park, where the mayor and five town council members are elected at-large to two-year terms, incumbent Mayor Will Beecherl filed unopposed to run for re-election and six candidates are vying for five seats on the town council.
Current town council members Don Snell, Leland B. White, and Alan Friedman filed to run for re-election, while Lydia Novakov and Marc Myers won’t be returning to the town council.

The other town council candidates who will be on the ballot May 2 include Mike Tibbals, Margaret S.C. Keliher and Mark P. Marynick.
Both the town of Highland Park and City of University Park will weigh in on whether or not to continue their DART membership on May 2.
