The 2026 season for Highland Park softball captain Cecilia Knutson hasn’t gone exactly as she envisioned.
An ace in the circle and fixture in the middle of the lineup, the senior has battled plenty of adversity this year.
Her bat hasn’t always produced the way it typically does.
And injuries have cropped up along the way.
But despite the bumps, Knutson has stayed resilient while helping Highland Park remain in the hunt for its first playoff berth since her freshman year.
Knutson explained that she faced a hitting slump during district play. “And after I kind of got through that, an injury happened,” she said. “So, that’s been really tough, but I’ve learned how to be there for my team when they need me. That’s the part that has been the most fun is knowing I can still serve the team when I’m not at my best or even out there.”
Knutson’s approach this year is characteristic of Highland Park’s entire roster, which includes many seniors who have grown up playing the game with her.And it has led to improved results. The squad has already more than doubled its District 12-5A win total from a year ago.
“This team is all about staying intense and staying gritty,” Knutson said. “We’ve worked on not backing down when we’re in a tough game, and I think it’s really helped us get to where we are. It’s been so fun and exciting to see where this season has gone and to be able to help in different ways.”
HP head coach Michael Pullen echoed those thoughts.
“I’ve been coaching here for 12 years, and this might be the best group of seniors I’ve ever had,” he said. “They’re great leaders and great culture kids. They love each other and play for each other, and they play with passion and energy. I couldn’t ask for a better group of kids and gritty is a great way to describe them.”
Those characteristics were on display in a recent win over The Colony, where HP’s playoff life was on the line.
With a loss likely eliminating the Lady Scots from postseason contention and HP down to its final three outs, Knutson and company rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to prevail, 2-1.
Knutson did her part in the rally with a single while also earning the win in the circle.
A similar effort might be required following the conclusion of the regular season. The two teams are currently on a collision course for a play-in game to break a tie for fourth.
But regardless of the final results, Knutson knows they won’t break the bond that has long been formed among her and her HP teammates.
“I moved here in sixth grade, so these are my best friends, not just my softball teammates,” Knutson said. “(Teammate) Shannon Heart was one of the first people I met out here and now we’re going to college together at Texas A&M.
“Honestly, I don’t know if it has really sunk in yet. I’m going to miss these girls so much.”
