Jesuit pitching staff dominates opponents

Since the start of District 7-6A competition, the Jesuit Dallas baseball team has scored an average of 11.2 runs per game while racking up 13 consecutive wins.

But if the bats don’t click when the playoffs roll around, the Rangers can take solace in knowing they boast a pitching staff that has been equally dominant.

In fact, the Rangers have a trio of pitchers who have fired no-hitters this season in seniors James Jorgensen, Jacob Martinez, and Sebastian Lasa.

Jorgensen has anchored the staff with a 4-0 record alongside a 0.50 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 24 innings.

A Texas signee who missed his junior campaign due to injury, Jorgensen has also been one of Jesuit’s most productive hitters, batting .421 with two homers, 22 RBIs and 18 runs scored. But it was his clean sheet on the bump April 7 in a 20-0 win over Richardson that has been the highlight of his season thus far.

“That was a special night,” Jorgensen said. “I had never thrown a no-hitter before, but I kind of felt something going in. It was great weather and the ball was coming out of my hand really nice. I just came out throwing strikes and hitting my spots and knowing I had a great defense behind me.”

Trinity signee Martinez, meanwhile, is 4-2 with a 2.74 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 38.1 innings, while Trinity commit Lasa is 5-0 and boasts a 2.96 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.

Both Martinez and Lasa recorded their no-hitters in wins against Irving.

“That was an awesome feeling,” Lasa said. “I was really just trying to do my job and keep my team in the game, and then when it was all over it was a no-hitter.”

With a trio of capable starting arms, as well as an effective reliever in sophomore Hudson Voss (3.10 ERA, 32 strikeouts, 20.1 innings), Jesuit figures to be a tough out when the postseason kicks off.

With 16 straight wins and an already-secure playoff berth, the Rangers are also one of the hottest teams in the state and are now receiving votes in the latest Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 6A state poll.

“We just have a really good pitching staff,” Jorgensen said. “In the playoffs, I think teams should be scared. We all bring a lot to the table and our stuff is legit. And we have a really deep staff as well.”

“We got off to a little bit of a bumpy start, but we kind of righted the ship, and since district started we’ve been rolling,” added Lasa. “The ultimate goal is definitely state, though. We did it back in 2016 and we’re hoping to bring that back.”
