The Highland Park Board of Trustees recognized outstanding athletes and mathletes during its May 19 meeting.
The McCulloch Intermediate School/Highland Park Middle School math and science team recently placed third in sweepstakes in Division 5A at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association middle school state championship, said Sherri Perkin, math and science instructional coach at MIS/HPMS.
Seventeen of the 25 students who competed at the state level earned recognition for their individual achievements, she said.
Matthew Schmidl placed third in sixth-grade science. Stella Chen placed second in seventh-grade general math and third in science, as well as ranked in the top ten in all four events. Anna Markin placed first in seventh-grade science.
The board also recognized Highland Park’s doubles tennis team of Collier Muenker and Steven Hu, who brought home the gold medal at the Class 5A State Championship earlier this month.
The duo was the first HP boys doubles team to win a state championship in 20 years, and the first boys doubles team in UIL history to win a state championship after finishing third in regionals, head coach Vince Sharp said.
Head coach Richard Wager told the board about the accomplishments of HP’s boys golf team. The golfers won 15 of their 38 tournaments. Highland Park teams were the regional champion and regional third place finisher, and the school had two of the top three teams at the 5A state tournament.
The girls golf team was one of only 12 out of hundreds of 5A girls programs in Texas to compete at the state tournament, head coach Mercedes Trent said. The team finished seventh overall.
Head coach Justin James told the board that the girls gymnastics team recently finished 12th at the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association state meet. The boys team qualified for the state championship despite finishing fourth in the regional meet, and went on to score its record high for the season and to finish in ninth place, head coach Mark Sherman said.
