The Highland Park ISD board of trustees Aug. 18 approved the district’s 2026-2027 tax rate.

The district adopted a maintenance and operations tax rate of $0.6428 per $100 valuation and an interest and sinking tax rate of $0.1700 for a total tax rate of $0.8128 per $100 valuation for 2026-2027.

Maintenance and operations tax money goes toward daily school district operations, such as teacher and staff salaries. I&S tax dollars go toward principal and interest on debt.

Of the $0.6428 per $100 valuation M&O tax rate adopted for 2026-2027, $0.0800 is from “golden pennies” not subject to recapture by the state.

The 2025-2026 M&O tax rate was $0.6647 per $100 valuation and the I&S tax rate was $0.1700 per $100 valuation for a total tax rate of $0.8347 per $100 valuation.

District officials say the 2026-2027 adopted tax rate marks a 32.4% reduction since 2017-2018.

In other news, the district:

  • Received updates on the status of 2024 bond projects, which were 90% completed over the summer, STAAR and AP test results, teacher and staff retention and compensation, and more.
