While the North Mesquite rushing attack kept reaching the end zone Thursday, W.T. White struggled to capitalize on its own chances.
The resulting 50-7 defeat in the District 7-5A Div. I opener at Loos Stadium kept the Longhorns winless on the season. They have been outscored by a combined 159-27.
Using the run-heavy, triple-option scheme, the Stallions (2-2, 1-0) amassed 435 rushing yards as a team and crossed the goal line on seven of their first eight possessions.
They opened with a 53-yard scoring dash by Camren Greene on the fourth play from scrimmage. He finished with 139 yards and three touchdowns, with almost all of that production coming in the first half.
WTW started its first drive with back-to-back penalties before a 91-yard scoring pass from Jayden Street to Lovell Neal to tie the score at 7-7. However, the momentum was short-lived.
North Mesquite subsequently racked up 43 unanswered points. Imyous Sewell ran for a game-high 142 yards on just six carries, with two touchdowns.
Sewell’s 62-yard scamper in the second quarter set up a Greene score, and Sewell provided another highlight with a 39-yard touchdown of his own midway through the third.
The Longhorns (0-4, 0-1) had chances to remain within striking distance. They drove inside the North Mesquite 10-yard line three times — twice reaching the 1 — but came away with no points each time due to miscues and lost yardage.
On third-and-goal at the North Mesquite 1 late in the first quarter, a potential game-tying drive was derailed by an errant snap that lost 28 yards.
North Mesquite’s next possession ended with its only completed pass, a 37-yard touchdown strike from Bryston Palacios to Robert Rodriguez to extend the margin to 21-7.
Later, WTW had three chances from the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter before a sack and two incomplete passes ended the threat.
The Longhorns have scored just four touchdowns in their first four games, and the schedule doesn’t provide any immediate relief with a road trip to Tyler looming next week.
Neal was a bright spot on Thursday with four catches for 146 yards, although 91 of them came on a single play. Street and Jordan Sims collectively tallied 225 passing yards. WTW’s Cash Carson intercepted a pass on the final play before halftime.
