Greenhill head football coach KJ Williams knew his team faced a tough challenge in the unbeaten Bullard Brook Hill Guard.
That task was made even more tough without quarterback Wesley Black, who suffered a dislocated left shoulder in the previous game and was unavailable for this contest.
The effort was there, but Greenhill was manhandled, 57-0, on Homecoming Friday at Brinkmann Field, evening its record to 3-3 on the season.
“Our kids battled to the end,” Williams, in his fourth season leading the program, said. “We knew it was going to be a physical game, and it was. Credit to Brook Hill. They have a great team. And that is where we want to be.”
Black, Greenhill’s 6-3 210-pound sophomore quarterback, had thrown for 808 yards and eight touchdowns in 4.5 games, directing the offense. Black’s injury came just before halftime in its previous game.
Williams said that Black will be re-evaluated in the coming week, and there is an outside chance of him suiting up Friday against HSAA.
“We’re not gonna rush the kid,” Williams said. “He is a special player. He’s talented and we’re not gonna jeopardize his career.”
Without Black against a powerful Brook Hill team, the Hornets struggled offensively, with four different players taking snaps under center. None of the four Greenhill pass attempts were completions, with three being intercepted.
Yale commit Trey Davis led Greenhill rushing for 34 yards on seven carries. Williams calls Davis, who also had one interception defensively, a “tremendous player.” A year ago, Davis had 72 catches for 1,131 yards and 11 touchdowns. This season he has 31 grabs for 599 yards and seven touchdowns.
Greenhill managed just 77 yards — all on the ground — total offense, on 30 attempts. CJ Glenn also had 34 rushing yards on 12 carries. Glenn had the team’s lone offensive highlight racing 35-yards for a first-quarter touchdown, but that was negated by a holding penalty.
Running back Paul-Antoine Lapointe spearheaded a balanced Bullard Brook Hill (6-0, 0-0, TAPPS DII District 2) attack with three scoring runs (54, 19 and 69 yards) while quarterback Zach Ryle threw a pair of touchdowns and ran for another.
A year ago, Greenhill finished 5-5 and came within one victory of playing in the SPC 3A title game. The Hornets, with a small roster this season, are navigating a maverick schedule, and thus not eligible for SPC postseason.
After hosting HSAA next week, Greenhill finishes up the regular season Oct. 23 at Fort Worth Nolan Catholic followed by a home game against Bryan Brazos Christian on Oct. 30.
