Remember the ’90s? MTV was in its infancy, neon was hot, and cell phones really were for making phone calls. The headlines from Preston Hollow People, also known as Northside People, were dope. Read on to learn about what was kickin’ 30-plus years ago.
Shootout at the Burger Corral (Oct. 19, 1989)
Texas Gov. Bill Clements was seated at a table in Goff’s Hamburgers, enjoying a burger, when a gunman entered and placed his usual order: he directed some employees and customers to lie face down on the floor. The governor, who was not injured, was dining without the company of his Department of Public Safety bodyguard when the robbery occurred. The robber fired gun shots as he ran away from the restaurant, hitting one customer outside Goff’s in the leg.
Seniors Get Their Kicks (Oct. 10, 1991)
Move over Cowboys Cheerleaders. In the ’90s, the Town North YMCA Kickers had a style that was all their own. Decked out in matching white aerobic pants, tennis shoes, and blue shirts emblazoned with the squad’s name in pink letters, the kickers performed choreographed aerobics to anything from Big Band tunes to pop songs. The only requirement was age — kickers had to be at least 55 to join, and the average age of the group’s members was close to 70.
National Media Seeks Answers to Perot Puzzle (Oct. 29, 1992)
The media descended upon Preston Hollow, seeking to find out as much as possible about maverick presidential candidate Ross Perot. Time magazine wanted to know if Perot had contacted the Dallas Police Department about alleged death threats. Meanwhile, the Cable News Network was trying, without success, to find footage of Caroline Perot’s recent wedding. Dallas police instituted a 24-hour patrol of Perot’s Strait Lane home, which was also receiving secret service protection.
Greenhill’s 230-Yard Penalty (Oct. 13, 1994)
Greenhill’s halftime ceremony might have needed some fine tuning. The school was penalized by 10 yards per minute when it exceeded the time permitted for halftime during its homecoming game. After being assessed 230 yards in penalties, Greenhill had to kick off from the one-yard line and was backed up on a series of half-the-distance-to-the-goal penalties. But the Hornets still managed to defeat Arlington Oakridge 43-7. “In the future, perhaps we need to time the festivities a little closer,” coach Malcolm Walker remarked to Northside People.
And You Thought Oscar Loved Trash (Oct. 24, 1996)
The Dallas Police Department didn’t think nine missing trash cans had been taken by thieves. The cans were unaccounted for because of a conspiracy. The 30-gallon containers used to collect trash in North Dallas were so popular that people wanted more. But to get another, they had to report their first can as stolen. On the off chance that someone was actually stealing cans, police were doing all they could to find a culprit.
