With so many books being adapted for the big screen, it’s fitting that the Highland Park Literary Festival has started the “Lit Fest Flick Fest” as a way to kick off its festivities each year.
This year’s film is Bernie, the acclaimed 2011 comedy from director Richard Linklater (Boyhood) that stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey in a true-life story of a small-town Texas murder.
The screening will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village.
The movie isn’t based on a book, but rather on a Texas Monthly story by Skip Hollandsworth, who will attend the screening and participate in a Q&A afterward.

So it should be fun, and the proceeds will benefit year-round programming for the Lit Fest, which will hold the bulk of its activities in late February, including a keynote address by memoirist Jeannette Walls.
Tickets are $40, which includes a glass of wine. Order them here in advance, or you can buy tickets at the theater until the film sells out.
