Dave Bliss, Poster Boy of Lost Virtues, to Speak at HPUMC

|

I still remember the lead article when basketball coach Dave Bliss was exposed for a host of transgressions, the culmination of which was a smear campaign against murdered player Patrick Dennehy.

It read “Baylor Couldn’t Even Cheat Its Way to Mediocrity.”

Ouch.

Seven years later, I like to think we’ve escaped the shadows of Bliss and mediocrity. The men’s team made it to the Elite 8 this year, and overall our athletic teams have performed well, save for the injury-plagued football season.

In the past few years, when articles and sportscasts mentioned Baylor, they rarely mentioned Bliss. It appeared an introduction to my Baptist alma mater was finally not followed by a laundry listing of heinous crimes such as extortion, witness tampering, and murder.

It looks like Baylor’s no longer the only one trying to reinvent itself.

Bliss will be interviewed at Highland Park United Methodist Church at 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Sunday as part of Rev. Paul Rasmussen’s series on “Lost Virtues.”

Talk about a poster boy.

Bliss, widely regarded as the Judas of Baylor, should have plenty to say on the topic.
