THE CALL OF FREEDOM: Portraits of Political Prisoners and Dissidents, a new book by former U.S. President George W. Bush, will be released on March 9, 2027. An exhibition at the George W. Bush Presidential Center featuring President Bush’s portraits will open to the public on the same day.
The book will include the portraits and stories of 44 women and men from around the world who have been persecuted for their religious beliefs, gender, ethnicity, or political views.
Bush worked during his presidency to support those fighting for freedom around the world. While in office, he met with almost 200 political dissidents from around the globe. He has continued his efforts since leaving the White House.
“This book, coupled with our work at the Bush Institute, is a chance for me to send a message that the United States cares deeply about people seeking freedom,” Bush writes in THE CALL OF FREEDOM. “And hopefully these stories will remind us that we who live in liberty have a duty to stand with those who do not.”
Rushan Abbas is one of the political figures whose stories are told within the pages of Bush’s book. She is a Uyghur human rights activist and founder of Campaign for Uyghurs, which has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She is currently fighting for the release of her sister Gulshan Abbas, a retired Uyghur doctor, who has been detained by the Chinese government. The book also includes the story of Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, a Catholic bishop imprisoned by the Nicaraguan government.
