The chocolate mousse, or “Messy Face Cake,” as it’s also known, along with Tweety’s chocolate chip cookies, are legendary Camp Mystic desserts. Recreated by Sugar & Sage’s Chef Jill Bates, the chocolate mousse is now available for sale at Sugar and Sage Bakery and Coffee located at 4314 Lover’s Lane in University Park.

The eight-ounce serving sells for $8 and will be available through the end of the month. Sugar & Sage will donate a portion of the proceeds to a GoFundMe account established to support Camp Mystic families and staff.

Camp food is an integral part of the camp experience. In April 2023, I wrote a story for People Newspapers about it and had overwhelming response from local campers from camps all over Texas who wanted to share their camp favorites. Mystic’s mousse was mentioned in that story.

Jill is a friend and fellow member of Les Dames d’Escoffier Dallas. I reached out to her about the mousse and she responded immediately.

“Sugar & Sage is located in the heart of a community that is so connected to the victims of this flood,” Chef Bates told me. “Just as they support our bakery, we want to show our support and send love to the Mystic families. We will be happy to recreate the Mystic Mousse that has brought joy to the campers for years.”

Four days after that conversation, the mousse is made and available for purchase.

Thanks to the Sugar & Sage team for their generosity.
