Weir’s Furniture, which started nearly eight decades ago with a single store on Knox Street, is closing all its stores.
The popular retailer, which was founded by J. Ray and Bea Weir in 1948, will close when all merchandise is sold. Weir’s Furniture has a store at 4540 Travis Street, another at 4800 Spring Valley Road, as well as stores in Plano and Southlake.
Weir’s Furniture’s Board of Directors said in a statement that the decision to close was made “after exploring all reasonable alternatives and careful evaluation of its long-term financial position, difficult market conditions and operational challenges.”
“This was an extremely difficult decision, but closing now enables us to honor J. Ray and Bea’s legacy by finishing well and taking care of our employees,” said Al Boulden, Weir’s Chairman of the Board. “From the very beginning, Weir’s mission has been rooted in honoring God and serving our people. We are incredibly grateful to our customers, employees, and the broader community who have supported us for so many decades and made Weir’s a beloved retailer throughout North Texas.”
J. Ray Weir served as president of Weir’s until he retired in 1972 when his son Dan was appointed president. Dan led Weir’s for 32 years until he stepped down and his nephew Mark Moore took over in 2003. Moore, the last family member to serve in the top management executive of the retailer, retired in 2024.
“We’ve built generational relationships with both customers and employees,” Moore added. “While your patronage has sustained us, it has been your friendships, encouragement, and faith in our team that truly defined us. We are proud of what we created and thankful for every person who has walked through our doors.”
